My partner and I came to Bayview to be induced to have our first baby together. Caren’s care and professionalism were unmatched. She instantly connected with us, walking us through where we were at with being induced so far and what was ahead—and she did this with compassion, realism, confidence, and excitement for us. We were told the water had already broken and the Petocin would kick in any time, but as the hours passed Caren suspected something and called in a colleague to check. They found the water actually hadn’t been broken, which was why delivery was stalling. Once delivery began, Caren was pivotal in ensuring the delivery team had the tools they needed while also assuring my partner and me that all was well. She was among the last to leave, helping my partner with immediate recovery and making sure we knew how to order food from the hospital kitchen. She didn’t have to, but Caren stopped by our post-delivery room to check in and see our baby while she was nearby on other business. It meant a great deal to us that Caren took the time to do this. My partner and I were so impressed by and grateful for Caren. She applied systems thinking to everything she did, anticipating our needs and those of her colleagues, watching for signs of progress being derailed, and intervening proactively when needed. She knew exactly what to do and exactly when to do it. And her care and compassion made a major life experience special and as low-stress as a delivery can be.
