Whitney really made his day and turned around his entire stay.
Whitney was taking care of a patient who had been hospitalized for about a week. He was newly diagnosed with cancer and started chemo very early into his admission. Due to COVID in the community, he was refusing to allow anyone except his wife to come to the floor to see him. He was also not willing to chance his health by walking in the halls or courtyard, so he isolated himself in his room. He had retired from the military at least 10 years ago and very much likes structure and routine in his daily activities, which he had not seen here, and was quite grumpy and vocal about it.

Whitney did not let that deter her. She took the time to listen to him and found out he loved golf. Upon his retirement, he had made it his sole mission to play as much as possible. He was actually in the middle of a round of golf when the pain hit and he had to stop to come to the hospital. So Whitney, without prompting by the patient, took it upon herself to go and buy a putt-putt mat and plastic golf club and balls so he could practice his golf game in his room to help pass the time. On top of that, she did not take responsibility for this generous gift but labeled it from the entire floor and snuck it into his room while he was in the shower.

He was so grateful for her generosity (yes, he still knew it was her that did it) and he stated over and over again how unnecessary it was. He was beaming, and loved it so much he asked his wife to bring up his real putter so he could really practice. Whitney really made his day and turned around his entire stay. Whitney truly exemplifies the characteristics of a DAISY Nurse!
