Chris, that extra step you took has made all the difference in the world for me.
My father came in early in the evening and I was with him, along with his wife. He came in via EMS. He was septic and had pneumonia. He was freezing and you kept bringing him warm blankets. You could not get his blood pressure to stabilize as he was really, really hypotensive. You were so nice to him and to us. After his CT scan of the head, you asked us if we wanted to wait and go with you while you took him to the ICU. I don’t know if you remember. I was a bit surprised as it was 1:30 in the morning by then. You told us you had cleared it with the nurses in the ICU. That extra step you took has made all the difference in the world for me. I was able to see my father finally warm and his color improved. I told him he looked better and he said he felt so as well. I knew very well how sick he was, but I had no idea I would never see him again as he passed away 24 hours later. I don’t know if this is protocol to take people to the ICU or if you had a feeling about his condition, but that extra step made all the difference to me because I was able to say goodbye and my very last memory of him was that we was comfortable and warm. Please keep this in mind if you ever feel that you aren’t appreciated or don’t make a difference.
