On arrival, Emily quickly established 2 IVs on this pediatric patient and Allissa had all the medications and fluid immediately available.
Emily and Allissa were instrumental in working with an exceptionally difficult case that came into the Emergency Department. Although this may seem routine, care delivered and emotions are taken to another level with a child is in severe distress and appears to be at end of life. A four-year-old boy choked on gummy bears at home. When EMS arrived, he was in cardiac arrest and shocked 3 times. He had return of pulses but remained bradycardiac. EMS attempted intubation but were unsuccessful. Emily and Allissa set up for success in preparation for the arrival of the patient. Medications and intubation equipment were all in place based on weight and broslow color. Anticipating a difficult intubation, Anesthesia was waiting at the bedside. Yale New Haven Hospital was instructed to get the helicopter ready. On arrival, Emily quickly established 2 IVs on this pediatric patient and Allissa had all the medications and fluid immediately available. The patient finally was intubated and stabilized by the team. Emily and Allissa remained calm throughout and had suggestions that the Physician incorporated into the patient's care. The parents were brought to the bedside and both RNs assisted with communication to the distraught parents. The skills and poise of both Emily and Allissa reflect two Extraordinary DAISY Nurses.
