Karene Humelsine RN is the poster child for selfless nursing care. She always thinks of patient safety before anything else. In her time at our center, she has empowered the nursing staff to speak up and become advocates for their patients. I cannot limit this nomination to just one event as Karene is constantly working her magic every day. She has worked to initiate "hard stops" that truly limit the ASC clientele to only healthy appropriate patients for outside of the hospital care -- which has become increasingly important during the pandemic with limited inpatient bed space. The pre-op nurses feel they can speak up to the procedural doctors or the anesthesiologists for patients with elevated glucose, heart rate, or blood pressure readings to let them know the patient might not be a good candidate under their current physical circumstances. The recovery room nurses now have no problem asking a doctor to return to the center to "lay eyes" on a patient that seems out of sorts. She has empowered the nursing staff to be the eyes and ears of safety. She is constantly vigilant as she rounds through the surgery center. She has learned all aspects of nursing care to be able to monitor any situation that might arise. She works in all nursing areas to cover breaks and call-ins by staff. She knows the rules and regulations like the back of her hand and is the eternal student of all things care-related. It has been such a pleasure and learning experience to work with her. My nursing career is stronger because of Karene.
