Kayla built trust by listening to him and allowing him choices so he would allow her to join and lead in his care.
A few weeks ago, Kayla and I were asked to come help with a CP and autism patient who was being defiant and angry about getting up to go to the bathroom. He wanted to simply void and stool in bed. He was screaming at his grandmother and telling the nurse in the room that he wanted them to leave. The room was tense with the grandmother responding by yelling back at the patient to get up. Kayla came in and has a brother with mental delays and has experience dealing with defiance from mentally challenged people. She immediately went in and sat next to him. She calmly talked to the patient asking him what he felt and how he could get to the bathroom. He told her he needed to go but did not want to. She patiently repeated that he should get up and go but that they could wait for him to get ready. The room calmed down as she waited with him and continued to talk to him about how he was feeling and reinforcing the need for him to go. About 15 minutes later, Kayla gently touched his arm to lead him up. He calmly got up and made his way to the bathroom. She succeeded in calming him down and getting him to where he needed to be. She built trust by listening to him and allowing him choices so he would allow her to join and lead in his care. She achieved the goals of best care for the patient and did it peacefully and with his compliance. Kayla was exceptional in that moment and helped improve the patient's experience and quality of care.
