George had provided the most holistic care I have witnessed in a long time.
I am deeply humbled at the exceptional care that I had witnessed during one of my shifts in the ICU. As a critical care nurse practitioner here at Mercy hospital, death and dying is nothing new and something we must help patients, families, and coworkers deal with. What I witnessed today was probably the most exceptional, compassionate, and patient-centered care that I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of.

George Martin really went above and beyond to develop personal connections and truly promote physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing in a patient towards their end of life. A patient with acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to COVID pneumonia requiring high amounts of oxygen had come to the decision that he was ready to pass. George listened and communicated on behalf of the patient and informed the providers of the patient's decision.

The patient had an extremely poor functional status at baseline with poor quality of life. His decision to transition to comfort care was a well-thought-out decision based on chronic functional status/quality of life. George made sure we were all of this. George really made his patient his priority and gathered all of the family members to make sure everybody was on board and kept them updated throughout the entire process. George sat at the bedside and administered medications in a Covid room to ensure the patient was comfortable and not alone during his last hours.

George had provided the most holistic care I have witnessed in a long time. I am honored to have George as one of my coworkers and Mercy should be very proud of the service this man delivers. The type of care I witnessed today can only be read in books.

George, you are truly an inspiration and everyone at Mercy Hospital is lucky to have you as a coworker and families are lucky to have you caring for their loved ones. Although words do not really give this experience justice, this is the type of care that truly incorporates the Mercy mission statement and should be the type of care that we all strive to deliver.
