It’s not too often that you hear of anyone dedicating 37 years of service to the same place of work anymore. Becky Hall has done just that starting her career as a staff nurse in the operating room here at Rumford Hospital. She has worn many hats throughout her 37 years here that also included managing the operating room, directing the primary care practices, and now currently serving as our Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services. If you ask almost anyone who works here, they can share a story of how Becky went out of her way to do something for them.

When Becky announced her retirement, her team members wanted to be sure that Becky’s last day was memorable and that she would know, without a doubt, the positive impact she has left on everyone. What better way to honor Becky as a DAISY Nurse Leader. A DAISY Nurse Leader encompasses compassion for exemplary practice, role models extraordinary behavior, and the ability to create an environment that fosters care compassion. Over the last two years, Becky has truly encompassed all of these nursing values in leadership.

Back in March of 2020, the coronavirus was declared a pandemic. A silence fell over the hospital and many feared what was to come. While many walked away, our VP of nursing was calculating, as only Becky does, how she was going to support her team and community. She role modeled extraordinary behavior by immediately pulling in her entire nursing team to assess who could perform which roles that would need to be created to fight what has now been a two-year uphill battle. From setting up tents outside the ER for covid testing to mobilizing units to ND Paper for mass covid testing, and then working with the larger system to be one of the first hospitals in the state to provide the very first covid vaccines.

One would think that those accomplishments alone would have taken up all of her time, but she didn’t stop there. Becky quickly set up a covid vaccination team at Rumford Hospital, which would enable team members to receive their vaccines and then later the opportunity for thousands of people in the community to come to their local hospital to receive their vaccine as well. Once the age limit was announced to include children, Becky mobilized the vaccine clinic to the local schools. Becky never left our side through all of these extra tasks and truly showed gratitude to her team for going the extra mile.

Becky cares about her entire team. Staffing shortages have created increased stress on those still here. Becky has been known over the past couple of months to be acting as nurse supervisor for overnights, administering monoclonal antibodies at the Rumford Community Home on the weekends, and taking the time to check in with all of her team members to let them know that she is here for them. Becky advocates for her nurses and has promoted the image of nursing within the organization, community, and profession. Congratulations Becky on 37 years of service, commitment, and compassion to Rumford Hospital, the nursing team, and your family and friends. It has been a true honor to be a part of your nursing team.
