Nursing in my eyes is a profession of care that is incomplete without compassion. I saw care with compassion in Victoria. It was not only me but my 2.5-year-old daughter who was the actual patient of a life-changing surgery who instantly sensed it. Victoria was the day nurse of my daughter for 2 days. 2 days seems a very short time but when your child is in screaming pain every minute, it seems like it’s never-ending. It was Victoria’s constant and persistent compassion that made these days bearable for both me and my daughter. She tended to her on time and every time it was with unexplainable warmth and understanding.

The best thing that happened was that my daughter listened to her and tried her best to do all that Victoria wanted her to do. To have such skill with a child who is in extreme pain, you must have some special ingredient in your personality and Victoria has that special ingredient. On the second day when Victoria started her shift, the first thing my daughter said whilst crying to her – as she was in pain – was, “I missed you yesterday night, Victoria.” And at the end of the same day, she asked for Victoria’s phone number and said, “You are my friend now”. When the 2nd day ended, my daughter was mostly free from both physical and emotional stress because of Victoria’s immense efforts. My Daughter and I will always remember her.
