Nienel calmly reassured me that I was going to get through this and possibly without surgery.
After 5 days of excruciating pain and another 6 days of constant pain, I was admitted to the hospital. This was my first time being in a hospital after suffering from a ruptured appendix for 11 days, I mistakenly thought it was food poisoning, and now had an abscess and the possibility of losing a part of my colon. Dazed and confused from many days of fever, I was alone because no one was allowed to accompany me due to the Coronavirus. My phone was out of power and I was unable to reach anyone. Frankly, I was quite scared that I would have to go into surgery and go under.

Luckily, Nienel was there. After transferring from the Emergency Department, she greeted me warmly and made me feel right at home and that I was going to be taken care of. Not an easy feat for a surgery patient, to feel that comfort and connection. Nienel calmly reassured me that I was going to get through this and possibly without surgery. Nienel was a great listener and explained to me what antibiotics were ordered, who my physician would be, and what my care was going to be like. She didn’t act like a stranger and it really helped me. I often hear people fall into depression after a major event especially with their bodies and I was afraid of that. She gave me leverage and kept me from spinning into an isolated place. Her empathy and kindness brought me happiness and energy to get better.

Another thing, Nienel had patients all across the floor and constantly checked in on me, even when I didn’t use the call light. I also don’t think she took a break. She paid attention and never missed any of my requests. Nienel made a huge impression on me as a skilled and caring nurse who dedicates her time and energy to healing others. You don’t often find people like Nienel. Thank you, Nienel, I am feeling much better!
