My father referred to Debra as his angel. Her kindness inspired him back to life. Literally.
My father, age 86, was admitted to the 2nd floor with recurrent acute onset of abdominal pain. This was perhaps his 4th admission in 2 years with recurrent acute abdominal pain without any discernable etiology. He was in continuous excruciating pain. Ms. Miles, a surgical nurse from the 1st floor was floated to the 2nd floor on Sunday. My father had been in continuous pain for 5 days at this point. Ms. Miles administered several enemas to my father with good results which emptied his large intestine. Constipation was the presumed etiology of his pain. The kindness and sensitivity she showed my father that day helped to sustain him through what would be a life threatening experience. His abdominal pain continued unchanged. I flew in from Hawaii days later. My father at this point appeared as if he would die from whatever was happening in his abdomen. The doctor was willing to perform an exploratory lap to see if there was anything he could fix. There was. My pop had a congenitally shortened mesentery around which his ileum/cecal junction had become twisted, had a contained perforation, and some bowel ischemia. The doctor removed the twisted, necrotic bowel and anastomosed the intact bowel, and off to ICU, my father went to recover. 4 days on ventilator and 3 days on pressors. Successfully extubated, it appeared my father was going to die from bowel ischemia thought to be a side effect of the pressors he needed to sustain his blood pressure. He didn't. Slowly, incrementally he continued to recover until he was transferred out of the ICU to the 1st floor for continued recovery. He was very weak, had a poor appetite. Of all his wonderful attendants, Ms. Miles stood out. He remembered her from the 2nd floor where she administered his enemas. He referred to her as his angel. Her kindness inspired him back to life. Literally. My, 86 year old mother continues to enjoy my father after 69 years together in their home where they have lived since 1958 in significant part to the kindness, gentleness, competence of Ms. Miles. I have been a physician for 30 years now. Ms. Miles is one of the most superlative nurses I have been blessed to witness. I am so grateful to her for her care with my father. She was a bright spot in a dark time for our family. We will be forever grateful.
