I wanted to take a moment and recognize Beverly Brown and the amazing work she has done with a very difficult hospice patient. In my 20+ years of nursing, this is by far one of the most difficult cases that I have worked on from a medical, psychological, and ethical standpoint. Beverly has maintained professionalism and outstanding care at the most trying and difficult moments. She was able to establish a good rapport and relationship with a family that is very closed off to most new people coming into their world. Beverly undoubtedly has their trust and without that, we would not have been able to care for this patient at the level we are having to in the home. She is always available for the family and for me as a provider, willing to go above and beyond with the patient's and caregiver’s best interest in mind. I can truly say that without her assistance and management with this case the outcomes would have been quite different. Although the situation is still not ideal and where we as a healthcare team want this patient, we are respecting the patient's wishes, maintaining his integrity, and continuing to support the wife/patient in the decisions they are making regarding goals of care. Beverly truly exhibits a caring heart that is central to nursing!
