Being this far into the covid pandemic, it’s easy to become desensitized and burnt out from taking in critical covid patients over and over again. Summer has not lost her compassionate spirit despite all we have been through. A fairly young covid patient came in with respiratory distress, was immediately intubated, and eventually taken to ICU.

Every chance Summer got, she would lean into the patient’s ear and tell her we were here for her and that she needed to fight. When the family came back, she gave them a pep talk and let them know what they were going to see and encouraged them to talk to their mom and that she could still hear them. I believe Summer was exactly who that patient and family needed that day. She left me inspired and made me want to be the type of nurse she is. Summer is a true DAISY Nurse for her compassion to all patients, visitors, and fellow nurses.
