It brought tears to my eyes to know we still have nurses like Kalena that are here giving their hearts and giving their all.
Kalena had a patient on the 2nd-floor that coded and did not survive the code. Kalena and her 2nd-floor team were amazing during the code. They were cohesive, responsive, and professional. When the patient's wife was notified the patient had expired, she wanted to come to the hospital to see him one last time. Kalena went above and beyond with this family member. The wife wanted to not only meet the nurse who had been the last person to look into her husband's eyes, but she also wanted to know her. The wife wanted to know the caregiver with whom he had spent his last moments.

Kalena had her colleagues cover her patients and walked with the patient's spouse outside of the unit for 30 minutes. She shared who she was; she talked about moments of her time and connection with the patient, and she exhibited love and compassion to provide this family member with the closure she needed. These are the unseen heroics that oftentimes are overlooked, or we don't even know they happened. It wasn't until we did an RRT- code blue debrief that someone told me what had transpired after the code. It brought tears to my eyes to know we still have nurses like Kalena that are here giving their hearts and giving their all.

Note: This is Kalena's 2nd DAISY Award!
