How important is having the right nurse who goes the extra mile? My husband has a new diagnosis of esophageal cancer and we are trying to get everything done so he can finish his staging and get started on chemo and then get a huge surgery. This morning in endoscopy in the preprocedural area, I asked our awesome nurse, Christie, if she knew anything about our planned port today because we hadn't gotten communication about when it was going to happen. She took the time to track down information about it, and it turns out it wasn't scheduled until a later date, which would be a drill for us for several reasons. Without us asking her to do anything, she contacted the IR dept that places ports and made them add him on as a case today so we can get this all done in one day. Also, she got the teaching materials and "port book" to teach him about what to expect for the port and got consent so this can all happen today. She came back and told us after she had made all of the arrangements for us and it's like magic and so easy for us. Also, she is funny as hell. Just a nurse who has seen and done so much and makes us feel so secure as patients.
