Jessie's compassion, patience, and empathy were as if I were the only patient on the floor.
As a NICU nurse myself, it is challenging to be on the other side of healthcare. Stepping back from being a nurse to being the patient is not easy. When my daughter was born, I, like any parent, wanted her to be perfect. Being a NICU nurse I knew to look for anything and everything that could be wrong with her. When I found some abnormal assessment findings on my daughter, worry overcame me. This is when our nurse stepped in. Jessie went above and beyond to advocate for my newborn daughter in the labor and delivery unit and to help put my mind at ease. She knew my nurse background and could tell that I needed reassurance. When my daughter wasn't breastfeeding well and needed a minor procedure to help her breastfeed, she took it upon herself to do everything she could to convince an ENT physician to come in from home on a Saturday because she knew how important breastfeeding was to me. This procedure significantly helped my daughter eat. When I noticed something abnormal with my daughter's back and Jessie saw me in tears about it, she contacted the pediatrician and advocated for imaging to help put my mind at ease. When roadblocks to the testing occurred Jessie worked hard to help find a solution to get the testing done through an alternate route. She spent so much time on the phone that day organizing everything and communicating with me every step of the way with updates. I know that the labor and delivery floor was very busy that day, but her compassion, patience, and empathy were as if I were the only patient on the floor. I was discharged that day, able to focus on my daughter and healing, instead of focusing on worry and fear, all thanks to Jessie.
