Robin greeted my husband with a sense of humor that made him feel comfortable.
My husband is getting knee surgery on the coldest, snowiest day of the year. We arrived cold and anxious and just glad that we made it on the slick roads. Robin greeted my husband with a sense of humor that made him feel comfortable. She brought me a coke and graham cracked while I waited and just seemed so eager to help. All the hospital staff and doctors have been wonderful. Thanks, Robin & Good Luck. You are in the right career.

I was somewhat hesitant to undergo my scheduled hip surgery a week ago this past Monday due to the recent outbreak of the Omicron Covid Variant. I had heard so many horror stories from individuals who had to seek medical care at other facilities during this trying time. However, as were all my previous interactions with all the services at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, it was perfectly fine. All went “without a hitch” and I am recovering quite nicely. Not only did my surgery go as planned, but it was also better than expected. My surgery was first on the schedule that Monday morning. The weather had been dicey. Upon arrival, I found the parking lots to be cleared and staff actually allowed me early entry (I arrived at 5:35 instead of “by 6:00”) and courteously directed me to the CARES unit. The receptionist there was friendly/chipper (not my demeanor at 5:45 AM on a Monday morning due to COVID outbreak) and quickly checked me in. All the Pre-op staff were just as cheerful/helpful and went beyond what was required to make sure I was prepared mentally/physically for the surgery and to make sure I was comfortable. The surgical team got me ready. The attending RN helped me into position and carefully held me during my spinal anesthesia insertion. I was given some propofol? And then… (I don’t remember anything else). Post-op/Recovery continued with the same professional, “over-the-top” concern. I couldn’t have felt more cared for. In spite of their (I’m quite sure busy schedule), they made sure I had everything I needed, my questions were answered, and I was safe. They assisted me to make sure I had everything I needed to reach my goals for discharge that afternoon…a major goal of mine. They even took time to humor me in (what my wife says I can be overwhelming/tiring) listening to my irrelevant stories and chit-chat! I wasn’t in a hospital. I felt at home.
