Always a smile on her face, never showing that she may be tired, frustrated, or may have just left a room of someone much worse than my son.
As parents of a healthy 18-year-old son, never in our wildest dreams did we think we’d ever hear the words, “We are not sure your son is going to recover”, your heart drops, then immediately races, you are short of breath and can’t feel your body, you’re numb. This is what my wife and I went through back in August, we will always know that day. My wife, being a nurse who has cared for many covid patients, realizes how challenging, exhausting, emotionally draining, and all too often how defeating this pandemic has been. It's ever so difficult to hide these emotions from your face as you walk into the room of a critically ill patient. Your staff in the ICU does it all right! Our 18-year-old son, J, was admitted and spent almost 7 days in the ICU as a Covid positive patient. It was an overwhelming experience for us to see our child so sick and have the knowledge of just how crazy this virus can be.

Although all of the staff were wonderful, as we sit and reflect on what was by far the scariest 10 days of our life, we can't help but remember a few of the staff members in the ICU who stood out above the rest.  Deana Raguz BSN, RN is a nurse who has truly found her passion. She made it her mission to be sure our son self-proned, knowing that was the best thing for him. She checked on him even when she wasn't assigned to him. Always a smile on her face, never showing that she may be tired, frustrated, or may have just left a room of someone much worse than my son. Deana is a DAISY Nurse, plain and simple!

Our care team was wonderful. In everything they do, it's clear that their position with the Cleveland Clinic is not just a job, these three are pursuing their passion. When it comes to this line of work, skill can be taught but, they hold the key.... empathy, dedication, passion, and the bedside manners of an Angel. J has since followed up with his PCP and has been cleared by the cardiologist. His Echocardiogram was normal and his follow-up labs and Chest x-ray were all clear. He is back to his baseline, attending his first year of college. We truly appreciate and will never forget the care our son received.
