Alena has arranged three events in Hickory CBOC to recognize and honor our Veterans.
Alena serves as the spiritual and alternative care champion for the Hickory CBOC. Over the last year, she has worked collaboratively with one of our doctors to bring a Whole Health Chaplain monthly to Hickory to make spiritual care more available in primary care. She has worked diligently to bring spiritual literature including bibles, care notes, and brochures and keeps this literature stocked and up to date. Many Veterans have commented on how much the literature has helped them. She has arranged three events in Hickory CBOC to recognize and honor our Veterans. An Easter celebration, a Memorial Service of fallen Veterans and COVID19 victims, and a Day of Prayer with a flag-raising Ceremony. The medical center public affairs officer came to film the Memorial service and video was posted on the WNCVAHCS Social Media. This service involved staff who played the bagpipes, and spoke about personal experiences of nursing during crisis and pandemic and the experience of the loss of a father to COVID. The goal of these events is to increase awareness of spiritual care in primary care, improve Veteran care and improve employee support and morale. Alena truly believes everyone needs healing and inner peace and that we can come together to use spirituality along with care for the body and mind and to provide holistic care to our Veterans and for each other.
