Colleen is an exceptional nurse who exudes compassion and positivity daily. From taking the extra time to talk to family, patients, and providers to making sure the patients' hair is combed/washed and sometimes styled. On this day I got to witness Colleen sing hymns with a patient who was struggling to make decisions about end-of-life care. She went out of her way to make sure the patient could talk to his pastor on the phone, even though she didn't have time to eat. With all these arrangements, the patient was able to make his decisions about his next steps of care and make sure his healthcare surrogate knew his wishes. Without all the extra care provided by Colleen, this may not have occurred. This is the consistent care and compassion Colleen shows to her patients, no matter the patient's history or behaviors. Colleen's positive attitude permeates the entire unit when she's on shift and we know it will be a great day when I see her smiling face.
