A patient on the unit was newly diagnosed with CA and Spanish speaking only, therefore, some communication was difficult. Andrea got a phone call that the patient's car needed to be moved due to construction (the patient was not parked anywhere illegal, it was circumstantial that they wanted the car to be moved). The patient struggled to find someone to come in and move his car. By the time a friend came to move the car, it had been towed. Andrea called the police station and tried to clear up the situation. She had to call and speak to many different people to get the information she needed. They referred her to the towing company who told her that there was nothing that could be done regarding the cost. The amount of money that was charged was devastating for the patient, who shared he also had significant financial instability. Andrea called Case Management and other services offered by the hospital, at which point Andrea offered to use her own money to help pay for the ticket if there was no other solution. She reached out to the nurse manager and supervisor who understood and were also sympathetic to the situation.

Eventually, after days of following up, Andrea found that the ticket was cleared and the patient would not have to pay anything. Andrea ensured that the patient was kept up to date each step of the way and utilized in-person Spanish translation to ensure the patient understood what was happening. She went above and beyond for the patient. She was moved with compassion and went out of her way to change the situation to alleviate significant stress for the patient already struggling with the new diagnosis of CA. She consistently goes above and beyond, truly cares about the patients and staff, and is an exceptionally knowledgeable nurse. She is a wonderful nurse to work with. We are very lucky to have Andrea.
