Not only did Gaby call a second RRT to advocate for her patient but she also held the patient's hand through this whole process.
Gabriela Gomez is a new nurse who has far exceeded everyone's expectations. Recently, she had a hard situation with a declining patient. What started out as just a difficult nurse assignment soon turned into an emotional day for Gaby. Her patient was declining fast and needed 1:1 care. Although Gaby had other patients, she made sure that she was tending to every single one of the patient's needs. Gaby was a huge advocate for a patient who could no longer advocate for himself. When after the first RRT she still did not feel that the patient was stable, she called in some more experienced nurses to get their opinions. Although she was told that patient was stabilized and to stay on the unit Gaby used her nursing judgment and questioning attitude when she could tell her patient was not comfortable. The patient was going through a lot and not only did Gaby call a second RRT to advocate for her patient but she also held the patient's hand through this whole process. Although the hospital room soon became busy with doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists, Gaby did not leave her patient's side once. Although she didn't know if the patient understood her anymore she continued to talk to the patient and treated him with the dignity and respect that everybody deserves. Gaby put her patient's needs before hers. It was not until 6:30 PM that we found out Gaby did not even have a lunch break. However, not once did we hear Gaby complain about the day she was having. Although Gaby is a new nurse you would never be able to tell that with how confident she was that day and the empathy and respect she showed to her patient. We definitely need more nurses like Gaby during these difficult times. She deserves to be recognized.
