Al, while maintaining an extraordinary level of professionalism, was able to show her his compassion.
We first met Al during one of the most difficult times in our lives. We imagine this is how Al meets most of the veterans in his life. Our encounter with Al began in the early morning of S's first day at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He experienced two seizures and was taken to the MICU immediately following the first seizure. There J met the doctor and Al. As they were explaining what had occurred with the first seizure S began experiencing the second one. After witnessing their swift response she knew he would be in the best of care. Al, while maintaining an extraordinary level of professionalism, was able to show her his compassion. His thoughtfulness. His kindness. His genuine concern. It is impossible to highlight every outstanding moment we experienced with Al over the next several days. There were many. Some were subtle some were more than we expected. Al, like most, would say it's my job. While that may be true, it takes a certain type of person to perform at Al's level. He provided extraordinary care not only for his patient but for the family. A family that was already overwhelmed with concern. He was able to calmly and confidently explain everything on a level they could understand. 100 words fall short of describing Al's commitment to his profession. Al, thank you from our entire family. The world is a better place with you in it.
