We contacted Joanie who immediately started making calls from home to pave the way to admitting our mother.
Our 98-year-old mother is a Navy WWII veteran. For the past several years, she has suffered increasing health issues including a broken hip and wrist, breast cancer, and congenital heart failure. Through it all, she continues to live in her own home, owing much to the incredible care of Joanie and her doctor. Last week my mother developed pseudogout in her knee and lost all strength in her arms and legs. We literally dragged and carried her to the VA ED that examined her and refused admittance due to a bed shortage. We returned to her home in total despair – having to assist her with toilet issues. The next morning, we contacted Joanie who immediately started making calls from home to pave the way to admitting our mother. With her doctor's involvement, Joanie had all the necessary staff waiting as we returned to the VA Medical Center the following day. They had her admitted within one hour and her recovery was relatively rapid with the proper personal care and change in medications. Working from home, Joanie demonstrated her incredible care and knowledge to help us navigate the system. She even brought my mother one of the beautiful quilts that are donated to WWII vets. She is the angel of the VA in our eyes and absolutely deserving of this honor!
