Carissa stated, “What matters most is that you’re here with him now”. Those words struck me like a bolt of lightning. My whole attitude changed because she was right.
Carissa was my uncle’s Wound Care nurse, on the day he was admitted to the Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit. She came into the room with a comforting voice, introducing herself and her role in his care. She had no idea what impact she would have on me. As Carissa checked my uncle over for pressure injuries and tended to his catheter wound, she asked questions regarding his mental status before he became ill. I informed her that I had not seen him in 10 years, so I wasn’t sure of his mental status. I expressed my remorse for all the missed time and turned into a blubbering mess. She listened as I spilled out everything my family and I went through before we had a conservator take over his care, and how it has been since. Without skipping a beat, she shared her experience dealing with her own similar family issues and stated, “What matters most is that you’re here with him now”. Those words struck me like a bolt of lightning. My whole attitude changed because she was right. I needed that “pep talk” to pull myself together. All the while, she continued to assess my uncle for areas of pressure injury including inspection and cleaning of his urinary catheter wound. She even checked with me that I was OK with seeing my uncle’s lower region before she moved his gown. Cleaning the wound was painful for him. As he moaned, she addressed him by his name and apologized for the pain. She talked to him as a human, not someone who has lost his mental capacity. She explained everything she was doing as she went along. She was extremely gentle with him, especially his feet, which are in bad shape due to his diabetes and sedentary lifestyle. Her compassion and her professionalism made her stand out among all the nurses, providers, and specialists who came into his room that day. Thank you, Carissa, for the AMAZING care!
