In 2020, the MICU team took on the challenges of the COVID pandemic with grit and endurance. The COVID pandemic has begun to wax and wane, yet they have continued to provide exceptional care to every patient in their unit.

One day in March, I picked up a shift in the MICU. Little did I know when I left that day, I would be awe inspired by the entire team. The people on side C were Jackie Melton as charge nurse; Mackenzie Grady, RN; Cola Whitehead, Unit Secretary; Giovanna Gunn, RN; Dr. Manipatti, many other fellows and residents, as well as ERT and the GI team. After lunch, a patient was transferred in with a GI bleed who had already had significant blood loss. The nurses and physicians all met as a team and prepared for the patient’s arrival by ordering emergency release blood, level I transfuser, GI consult at the bedside for a scope, and calling in VIR.

When the patient arrived the patient was on 3 different pressors to maintain a BP, and was not able to maintain the BP. Mackenzie was the primary nurse and managed all 8 drips, plus the medications that were administered as Dr. Manipatti the attending ordered them. Jackie, the charge nurse, was outside the room and documented EVERYTHING and she retrieved supplies as needed (which was often). Cola, the unit secretary, was outside the room and assisted with ordering code carts as they were opened so that the team would have what was needed. Cola also managed phone calls, visitors and went to the blood bank to get the emergency release blood each time it was ordered. Sarah & Camryn administered blood products and assisted with procedures. Jenni from ERT was called to assist with placing an IO because a line could not be placed. Dr. Manipatti and the GI physician placed a Blakemore tube to tamponade the bleeding. Ryan came from A side to assist with securing the Blakemore. There were other nurses who stepped in to assist as needed. During this time, Giovanna made sure all of the other patients on C side were ok and Olivia sat with a patient who required one on one care.

The endurance and dedication of this team and all of the moving pieces and parts were nothing short of teamwork at its best. At the end of the day, there were 11 canisters of blood that collected blood from where the patient was bleeding and over 25 blood products were administered. Each team member supported each other throughout the hours it took to stabilize the patient to get the patient to VIR. Just watching the teamwork together to accomplish a common goal was awe-inspiring. What makes this story so much better is that it was obvious that this teamwork occurs daily to seamlessly care for patients. The demonstration of professionalism, teamwork, collaboration, and support for one another makes them a DAISY Team.
