Melissa was just really thoughtful about how she was doing things, from my daughter's perspective.
I was at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles today. My daughter received care from a nurse called Melissa Acayan. My daughter was at the hospital for 2 hours, (and with most patients in and out, there’s not as much time to get to know the excellence of each nurse). However, from my own experience as a nurse in the past I noticed our nurse had a lot of common sense (which is not so common), she asked about which side she planned to get out of bed, and then moved all the medical stuff to the most convenient side, unplugged things, etc. and made it easier for her, she was just really thoughtful about how she was doing things, from my daughter's perspective. She explained everything very well, and did a great job getting an IV in, (my daughter mentioned all the methods people used to insert IVs in the past and failed). First of all, she didn’t try to overpromise with her abilities, she just began discussing why putting cold stuff on the site would probably make the veins narrower and harder to get! And that made sense to me - COMMON SENSE! Anyway - it was the ‘not so’ little things that she said that made me think - this is a ‘great nurse!’ I would imagine such nurses don’t get much recognition for short-term care. And common sense is something rare that people often take for granted, so I wanted on this occasion to recognize an awesome nurse who used wisdom and common sense.
