I had surgery to repair my prolapsed organs both rectocele and cystocele this week and after coming out of surgery woke up in recovery with Toy at my bedside. She was outstandingly compassionate and authentic in my recovery process which was going well until it wasn’t. Although the surgeons initially approved me for discharge, Toy felt something was amiss and advocated tirelessly to get the doctors to take another look at my surgery site which was bleeding more than she had expected it to. In the hour between first and second look I bled through 3 pads and a pair of scrubs and my blood pressure dropped. Even though the room wasn’t set up for an obstetrics exam, Toy made sure the doctors had the tools they needed to get a good look to see if follow up work was needed. Upon second glance the surgeons agreed that something was wrong and that I needed to go back to the OR for additional suturing. Throughout the entire day, while we were waiting for the OR to be ready for me, Toy stayed at my bedside holding my hand and telling me it was going to be OK. I genuinely felt safe in one of the most powerless perilous moments of my life because she was at my side. Toy is the single best nurse I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting. She was tender, honest, compassionate, kind, and fierce - and she saved me at best from significant bleeding in the car and a return trip to the hospital and at worst from something much more severe. She so holistically represents the spirit of the nursing profession that I encourage all of the nurses in the hospital to study under her exemplary tutelage. Thank you, Toy!
