One of our surgery patients was very anxious about having surgery due to multiple allergies she has. The patient has moderate allergy reactions to corn and corn products. The patient provided lists of corn-derived products including Lactated ringers, dextrose, lidocaine, and any products containing citrix acid, glucerin, pareth alcohols. The patient requested staff not to use hand sanitizer only use soap and water, no paper gowns or bedding, no disposable plastic bite blocks, BP cuffs, no powdered rubber instruments. No paper, cotton, wood, or disposable plastics should not be touched to mucus membranes. Esther Jenke took the time to investigate thoroughly and communicated with appropriate team members to ensure patient safety in a timely manner. Charting documentation was done correctly and thoroughly. Preop RN Lori prepped the patient in the preop room. She provided excellent customer care and safe care during the process. Lori provided effective communication to calm the patient's anxiety. Kyle, the OR nurse, prepared the OR room to ensure patient safety by removing all possible allergy trigger agents/materials. Recovery nurse Esther Smith provided excellent recovery care. She followed all instructions to avoid the patient’s allergic reactions. The patient did not have any allergy reaction at the time of discharge. The patient was very pleased when she was leaving the hospital. All team members involved in her care went above and beyond to provide safe and excellent patient care. Team communication throughout the whole process was very effective and proactive.
