Today I noticed a small vial Monte had with something in it, I asked what that was, and she showed me a vial she purchased at Hobby Lobby. When a patient expires, she prints a rhythm strip of the patient's last heartbeat/rhythm and rolls it into a scroll and places it in a glass vial, and gives it to the family of the patient. It was a very touching and heart-felt small gesture to do for the families of their passing loved ones. This gesture of her doing this shows her compassion for patients and families and should be recognized and hopefully, others will follow suit as well. Especially in these times we are in when loved ones cannot always be with patients at their last dying breath and nurses are rushed to get to their next patients with the overwhelming volume and high acuity of patients it is wonderful to see the heart of nursing still there.
