Derrick is so very thoughtful. He takes on tasks that are outside of what is required of him, and he provides competent and precise patient care. He noticed that the Pediatric toy supplies in the ER were out, so he went to the store and bought coloring boxes, crayons, and other toys to replenish the supplies. He did this using his personal funds and did not tell anyone. He wanted to ensure that pediatric patients had toys and other supplies to keep them occupied while they are here for care. This is not unusual for Derrick to provide exceptional care to his patient and to support the staff.

Several months ago, we had a snowstorm that kept staff in house for several days—during that time Derrick was the House Supervisor. Generally, we provide quick lunches and dinner for staff such as sandwiches, drinks, chips, and other fast food. Instead, Derrick went out and bought hot dogs, hamburgers, and made chili, spending his own funds to ensure that staff had hot meals for every meal while they were stuck here in house caring for our patients. The staff was very appreciative.

He is such a humble and kind soul, and he never mentioned this exceptional service to anyone. We found out months later about his generosity. This is the kind of person that Derrick is, not only to staff but to patients as well. He has been recognized by name in our Patient Satisfaction survey multiple times for providing exceptional care and going above and beyond to deliver kind, compassionate and caring service to those that he serves. Verbatim comments mentioned that this hospital needs more nurses such as Derrick, who is selfless and provides compassionate care that makes their stay better.
