Piper was nominated by the spouse of a patient who recently had open heart surgery. She was impressed with how staff included her in every step of the process, from explaining what to expect, to letting her know when they would update her. The most compassionate action that stood out to her though was when Piper was about to take her husband back to the OR. She said to Piper, “You are taking the most important person in the world from me, please take care of him.” And Piper replied, “For the next 5 hours, your husband is the most important person in the world to me and all of our team. We will!” The spouse of the patient states that through her tears a sense of calm came over her and she knew that he was going to be okay.
