Merriam brought a small Christmas tree for my son to make him feel the Christmas spirit even though we are spending Thanksgiving in the hospital.
My 4yo son was admitted to the emergency room almost 3 weeks ago and has been inpatient since then. He was in so much pain, lots of blood tests, CTs, MRI, and an IR procedure. He is very immunocompromised and into a lot of immunosuppressants. He seems very sad, full of fear, and anxiety but the kind nurses of 14th floor West Tower made it easy for him not to miss home for a while. They are very kind and compassionate in their work and I want to specifically highlight one of his nurses, Ms. Merriam who always goes out of her way to make sure that my baby is taken care of. You feel the sincerity and purity of her care. She always checked on us and asked if we need anything aside from the usual routine meds and care. One thing that really touched me and my husband was when she brought a small Christmas tree for my son to make him feel the Christmas spirit even though we are spending Thanksgiving in the hospital. He felt very happy and excited to put the Christmas balls and lights on the small tree. He loves Nurse Merriam and even says “I love you” to her. Such a very kind and sweet gesture not just making sure that her patient receives the appropriate medical care but also seeing to the emotional and mental aspects of the patient and parents. She even tried to squeeze time into her busy shift for me to play with my son even just for 5 minutes to show him care and love. Thank you very much Nurse Merriam for extending your motherly love to my dear son whose battling a severe and chronic autoimmune disease. You are such a blessing.
