Shawana models empathy and a caring attitude, takes time out from every day to check in on staff, she is always available to listen and assist her staff, her door is always open.
Shawana Burnette, DNP, RNC-OB, NEA-BC, CLNC, CCE is the Nurse Manager for the High Risk Antepartum and Postpartum units. However, her leadership skills impact Atrium Health far beyond those two units. Shawana is a DAISY Nurse Leader because she lives the mission of Atrium with the following activities and behaviors:

Improving Health - demonstrating extraordinary leadership Leading several cohorts in the LEIFs program Leading the Patients Choice initiative of the Women's Service Line Contributing to and participating in the AWHONN committee to develop a Respectful Care Model, a national effort to improve outcomes for birthing families. Assisting with management duties for CMC L&D while the manager position was vacated, she also assisted with management duties several years ago when the position of AVP of Women at CMC was open.

Elevating Hope- modeling empathy and a caring attitude, takes time out from every day to check in on staff, she is always available to listen and assist her staff, her door is always open. Helping to develop the AWHONNN respectful care model and sharing it with staff. Sitting down with patients who have complaints or concerns, listening to them, and working with them to resolve their issues; Shawana is often called upon when others are unable to resolve a patient complaint.

Advance Healing- motivates staff to achieve better outcomes for themselves and patients. Encouraging her staff to grow, she was instrumental in helping me go back to school and get a Master's degree and become the Perinatal Nurse Champion; she sees beyond the needs of her own department, understanding that as staff members grow in their profession, they may leave her unit but will contribute in other ways to the mission of Atrium. Shawana has challenged several teammates to participate in the LEIFS program and then helped them identify new leadership roles they can take on; she motivated several teammates to return to school, participate and be leaders in UBC and become unit educators; she saw the potential for growth in a LEIFs participant who now serves as the unit educator for the high-risk units. Challenges staff to do better, to dig deeper, and challenge the status quo in providing patient care; she gives staff permission to be creative and think outside the box.

Promotes an inclusive environment for all- Shawana works to have her team reflect the patient population and is willing to discuss uncomfortable issues to assure an inclusive unit. The Patients Choice initiative has the primary goal of respecting each patient as an individual and honoring their choices, Shawana is the person who came up with the idea and is following through to initiate an inclusive care environment. Being supportive of the efforts of the Perinatal Nurse Champion to promote equitable, best practices in perinatal care; providing time in her staff meetings to discuss the issues, and arranging for similar discussions at the Women's Service Line UBC.
