Nicole is a relatively new nurse and works as a phone Triage RN. Late in the day, a distressing phone call was forwarded to her. It was a patient who was distraught over their health condition and suicidal. She had never encountered this sort of patient issue prior to this call with most of her experience having been managing neurological diseases, medications, and treatments. However, this did not prevent Nicole from providing the timely and compassionate care the patient so desperately needed. She remained calm and compassionate while listening to the patient and ensuring their safety. She remained on the phone well past the end of her shift and helped coordinate support while contracting with the patient to not act on their thoughts. The challenge for any nurse that manages care over the phone is that the patient cannot be visually assessed to determine a plan of care. Additionally, the nurse may discover that resources are not readily available and must be creative in remotely managing a patient’s care.
