Gwen took the time to listen to this patient and what mattered most to her was feeling close to her grandsons while she was in the hospital.
On Friday, Gwen’s assignment included caring for a 49-year-old grandmother with 2 young grandsons whom she cares for while their parents are working. The patient had just learned earlier in the day that her cancer had spread and was no longer responding to treatment. The patient, along with her doctors had decided to move forward with home hospice care. When Gwen was helping her up to the restroom, she noticed her onesie that was tied around her waist had a tail sticking out. Gwen asked her about it and discovered the patient was wearing an Eeyore onesie that was a gift from her 2 young grandsons. She said she felt close to them by wearing it and could almost hear their giggles as if they could see her themselves. Gwen shared that she had a Winnie the Pooh costume at home and the patient jokingly said if Gwen wore it Saturday, they could parade through the halls together. Well…. If anyone knows Gwen, she is never one to miss an opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face. Gwen showed up early Saturday morning in her Winnie the Pooh costume, with a Piglet hat in hand. She recruited another inpatient nurse, who gladly put the piglet hat on and the three of them paraded down the hall. Gwen took the time to listen to this patient and what mattered most to her was feeling close to her grandsons while she was in the hospital. The simple act of putting on an old costume and dancing down the halls showed the compassion that Gwen brings to work every day and helped this patient feel a little closer to home. This isn’t a one-time scenario when it comes to Gwen. She constantly works to bring joy to her patients and co-workers regardless of what is going on in her own life. I couldn’t be more proud to work alongside such a selfless individual!
