Alyssa provided me with a level of care, respect and dignity which I have never experienced
In October I had surgery on my right kidney performed at Elmbrook Hospital. This surgery required an overnight stay on the sixth floor. While the care I received from registration to discharge was very good, one person in particular stood out from all of the individuals who cared for me. That individual was my overnight primary care nurse Alyssa.

I have had seventeen surgeries in my life, resulting in a lot of experience interacting with caregivers. In all my experiences I have never had the incredible care which Alyssa provided me. Alyssa was a role model of professionalism guided by compassion. When she was tending to my needs, I always had the impression I was the most important person in her care that night. She never appeared to be in a rush or hurry, but went about caring for me with an ease of care and efficiency that clearly demonstrated she knew what she was doing and her thoughts were fully present (not filled with what else she needed to be doing), which in turn helped me be at ease.

When I informed her of any needs I had, or asked questions about the care process and next steps, she listened attentively, without interruptive statements or assumptions, and asked great clarifying questions to ensure we were clear in our communication. When it came to pain management she provided me with options and information so I could make an informed decision for myself, which I found very refreshing. At 1 AM while she was performing a regular vitals check, I asked her if I could get out of bed and walk around a bit. She immediately set about helping me accomplish this, which in my estimation was no small feat considering my IV and the drain tube coming out of my back from the kidney. I am certain she had other duties she set aside for a few minutes to provide me with a "stretch of the legs."

Alyssa provided me with a level of care, respect and dignity which I have never experienced during previous hospitalizations or encounters. I hope you can find some way of letting her know how deeply I appreciate the care she gave and how unique a caregiver she was to me.
