The next day, Hannah stopped by our room to check on us even though I was no longer her patient.
When Hannah told me I was her first delivery after my son had arrived and the initial excitement "died down" the only thing I could say was, ''You're kidding ... you're good!" and she is good. Very good. I was lucky to have Hannah as my nurse and Kershaw Medical Center is lucky to have her as a nurse in Labor & Delivery.

Hannah is everything you want in a nurse: Dependable, compassionate, diligent, and so much more. She does her job well, with a smile on her face all while making her patients her number one priority. The manner in which Hannah does her job is a testament to not only her but also the job we do teaching our new nurses at Kershaw. If Hannah was nervous about her first patient on her own, I did not know because all I saw was a confident nurse who focused on the needs of that patient while providing the best care possible.

While I knew Hannah was a recent BSN graduate, the way she presented herself, coaching me through pre-epidural contractions (where I was ready to check out), and the epidural itself (hello fear of needles) made me believe that she was already many deliveries in and a well-seasoned nurse. She performed her job without missing a step and even my husband, following her lead, said, "I did whatever she did because she obviously knew something that I didn't." It was getting close to the end of her shift when we were getting close to delivery and not knowing how long we would be there, Hannah reassured me that she was not going anywhere until baby boy arrived. That dedication to me as her patient though I know it is part of the job, meant the world.

The next day, Hannah stopped by our room to check on us even though I was no longer her patient. That small, brief follow-up meant so much to us. With everything happening in the busy L&D rooms, Hannah remained calm, checked on us, and then went to the next patient's room to check on them. Not once did I see her waver. As an employee to have been able to experience what our patients experience when it comes to the quality of care in Labor & Delivery I feel very fortunate. Hannah exemplifies what we want in not just a good care team member but an excellent care team member and nurse. I know that any patient she has will receive the best care possible all while she remains committed to patient safety, quality, teamwork, and service.
