Courtney immediately pressed the Code button to get help, and started bagging him. Her quick action is the main reason he had the best possible outcome.
I'm nominating Courtney for her quick recognition and response to a Code Blue B situation. One minute, her patient was talking and joking with her, the next, he was clutching his throat and not moving any air. Rather than disbelief, thinking he was being dramatic, or even stopping to listen to his lungs, she immediately pressed the Code button to get help, and started bagging him. Her quick action is the main reason he had the best possible outcome- extubated the next morning, and home the morning after that! With no lingering effects! After the code team moved the patient to the PICU, rather than worrying about charting, paperwork, or how scary the event was, she went up to the ICU waiting room to be with the patient's mother so she wouldn't be alone! She even brought her up drinks and snacks because she remembered the mom saying she hadn't eaten. She explained what she could to the mom before the next person came in to relieve her and update the mom. Later, the patient's mother said to me "that nurse knew JUST what to do to save my son's life!" Courtney is a great nurse who is attentive to detail and compassionate, but this particular time takes the cake!
