There are multiple stories I could tell which would illustrate why I believe JD deserves this recognition. The common themes would be high-quality care, compassionate care, going the extra mile, treating each patient with the individualized care and respect they deserve, looking at the whole picture, and the list goes on and on. But the story I want to share is this one. JD was caring for a young and very sick patient. He spent days with this patient before intubation. After intubation, he would continue to talk to this patient, reassuring the patient that he was doing everything in his power to help the patient get better. I was in the room once when JD was doing EVERYTHING he could think of to help this patient all the time cheering the patient on and continuing to reassure the patient he would fulfill his promise to do all he could. And JD was doing everything he could for this patient, just as he does for all his patients. Being a witness to his passion and determination to help this patient get better was moving and something I will never forget. I have always admired JD, but this day and this experience solidify him as a true hero for all those who are lucky enough to be in his care.
