Shannon genuinely treats the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
At such a stressful time in healthcare, it is easy to become jaded. But not Shannon. Shannon has demonstrated such poise and empathy to her patients and coworkers regardless of circumstance. Let me set the scene: It was another day in the emergency room when beds are scarce, and patience is thin amongst those in the waiting room and those in treatment rooms. Shannon was my preceptor, and we were taking care of a patient in the hallway who was homeless and wanted to detox. His clothes were dirty, and his hands looked like he had been working in a coal mine. I was getting his vitals and Shannon was asking him all the appropriate questions. He interrupted us and said he wanted food and coffee. Instead of telling him “no” and that it was more important to assess him right now. Shannon offered to give him food, towels, and clean clothes after he allowed us to assess him first. This man was not very kind and I had mentioned that to Shannon. She quickly said, “it is not a matter of kindness. It is a matter of hopelessness”. Shannon got this patient clean clothes, a cup of coffee, and a warm meal. Shannon was not expecting anything in return for going above and beyond for this patient. She was not even expecting a thank you from this patient. Shannon genuinely treats the whole person, not just the diagnosis. That day, Shannon diagnosed and treated hopelessness. Thank you, Shannon, for what you do for your patients and coworkers. On this day I was truly uplifted by your kind and caring nature!
