There was a patient on IMU who had a history of a renal transplant and was having issues with bleeding. The doctors wanted the patient transferred to the facility that performed his transplant. The transfer was initiated on two different occasions and the patient transfer was denied both times. Jonnalyn was taking care of this patient on Saturday when she learned of the second denial. Jonnalyn was unhappy with this answer and felt strongly that this man needed to be transferred, so he may receive the specialized care that he required. She enlisted the wife's help to find out who the surgeon was that performed the transplant. She then researched the surgeon's name, called the physician's office, and then called the transplant center. One of the phone calls reached the transplant surgeon, who in turn called and spoke with the patient’s attending physician. The conversation led to the transplant surgeon agreeing to accept the patient under his care, and he stated he would arrange for the patient to be transferred the following day. The next day, Sunday, the patient was transferred for the specialized care he needed from the transplant center. Jonnalyn definitely exceeded expectations with this patient and family. She established a special professional connection and created a significant memorable experience by advocating for her patient. She has shown the highest standards of professional nursing practice, clinical excellence, and advocacy for the patient and family.
