Melanie is an agency nurse who has been working with us for almost a year now. She does a phenomenal job, and always goes above and beyond for her patients. We had a complex, long-term patient on our unit. The family reached out to me expressing what a great job Melanie did with their dad. They stated that when Melanie had him he did not have to receive any extra medication to calm him and that Melanie was not only informative to them, but compassionate. The family mentioned how they wished he could get in the shower. He was extremely weak, having been on the ventilator for an extended time and it was not safe for him to shower yet. I mentioned their request to Melanie. She agreed that he was not yet strong enough for that but that she would take extra measures to make sure he was clean. Melanie helped the CNA and they gave the patient a thorough bath and shampooed his hair. Melanie then trimmed his eyebrows and his beard. The patient’s appearance was greatly improved and the family was overjoyed. The patient’s daughter commented several times what a difference it made in her day to see her dad looking like that. Sometimes we forget it’s not always the big, complex, life-saving issues we deal with every day that mean the most. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that make the biggest impact on our patients and their families. Thanks, Melanie, for always going the extra mile!
