Through this, my appreciation of having a mentor and confidante around like Marlowe gave me hope. It reassured me that although I will face many challenges in life, he was someone I can count on.
Marlowe has been a tremendous influence on me since I started as a new grad, both as a nurse and as a person. His compassion extends far beyond his care for patients. I see and feel it every shift I work with him. He cares a great deal about his staff and goes out of his way to ensure they feel supported.
Personally, Marlowe has been an amazing mentor. He's taught me how to handle the ever-changing challenges of life. For example, a close family member of mine has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I found myself lost, not sure where I stood within my career anymore. I was scared to continue my line of work, afraid that the trauma I see every day while at work would combine with the emotional trauma I am experiencing outside of work. Marlowe never said more than he needed to. He made me feel comfortable coming to him when I needed to on my time. Never any pressure. Through this, my appreciation of having a mentor and confidante around like Marlowe gave me hope. It reassured me that although I will face many challenges in life, he was someone I can count on. I aspire to be like him now. Steady as a mountain and unwavering in who he is, the kind of leader I am working towards being like one day.
My story is not unique. I've heard countless tales from other staff of how Marlowe has been there for them. Made them laugh, feel validated, and valued as a staff member and as a person. Patients and staff respect his straightforwardness. Marlowe makes sure that patients play an active role in their healing. For example, he encourages patients to make a bridge so staff can change out absorbent pads underneath them. The patient might not realize it, but this helps to rehab their strength after surgery. I know we all love working with him. He fights for us when he is charge. He is an endless source of knowledge that he grows continuously. I can't think of anyone else I would want to receive the DAISY Award than Marlowe.
