Carolyn reminded me I had a family who loved me very much and was waiting for me to come home. Her actions that night were unlike any other nurse that had cared for me during my stay.
I became sick with Covid in late August. When I was unable to get the monoclonal antibody infusion due to an oxygen sat of 62, I was taken by ambulance to a nearby facility. I was transferred to Atrium NorthEast and into the Intensive Care Unit. Fortunately, I was alert, but aware of what was going on around me with every alarm and “code blue” wondering if I was next. I was moved from ICU to Family Medicine but continued to struggle to breathe. I was getting the most oxygen available to me - 90L. After a few days on this unit, I was tired and ready to give up. I just couldn’t fight it any longer and prayed for God to take me. I managed to slowly get the recliner behind the door and laid my head against the wall. It was at that very moment that Carolyn Bryan knocked, pushed the door open, and asked what I was doing. I told her I was ready to give up. She told me I couldn’t give up - not now - that I had come too far and fought too hard to give up now. She also reminded me I had a family who loved me very much and was waiting for me to come home. Her actions that night were unlike any other nurse that had cared for me during my stay. She bathed me and dressed me in a clean gown, something that hadn’t been done in weeks at the other facility. She put lotion on my legs to stop the cramping. But most importantly, she talked to me and convinced me not to give up. She went above and beyond to make sure I had what I needed and it’s obvious that her actions came from the heart. I spent 30 days hospitalized with Covid and was cared for by many wonderful nurses, however, none stand out like Ms. Bryan. She is the reason I am still here today, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for saving my life!
