My husband was admitted to your hospital for stroke like symptoms. My husband and I would like to thank Valencia and we would like to share our story. During the night, my 88-year-old husband became very confused and disoriented. Nurse Valencia handled his care with extraordinary compassion. Valencia did not know that this crazy-acting man had served his country during the Korean conflict, but she treated him with respect. This nurse did not know that this man worked on both the Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs, but she treated him as a valued person and her first priority was his safety as he tried to leave the hospital. Valencia could not know that this strange acting man is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to a large family, but she did realize that the family is part of the health care team and she reached out to me. She called me and let me talk to my husband so that I could help calm his fears. When I arrived at the hospital, I was a basket case. I had cried as I drove from Wiggins to Gulfport. I felt like I might lose my husband, if not physically, I feared that this confused man would replace the wonderful man I was married to for the last 49 years. Valencia came and sat with me as I cried. She used her nursing expertise and experience to comfort me. I feel that Valencia displayed all of the qualities of a DAISY Nurse. I don’t think that Valencia would recognize either my husband or me if we met on the street, she may not even remember us. I think that Valencia treats all of her patients with the same respect and compassion and that her encounter with us was just the way she interacts with all of her patients, on the night shift on the 5th floor. This story has a happy ending. My husband did not have a stroke. He had a TIA, and all of his confusion has cleared. My husband would like to apologize to Valencia for the trouble he caused her. We are home and we would like to thank all of the staff at your hospital, especially our DAISY Nurse, Valencia.
