We talked motorcycles, civil war history, travels of our youths – he sat next to my bed and took away the fear.
Steve did it all. He was so good to my wife, explaining what had, and what was, happening to me during and after this huge quad bypass operation. Steve was so caring and genuine toward me. He kept me talking with stories and then found areas of our mutual interests. We talked motorcycles, civil war history, travels of our youths – he sat next to my bed and took away the fear. He respected my intelligence and explained the numbers and colored lines on the vitals monitor, showed me my MRI pictures and explained the surgery he had witnessed performed upon me. He could sense that I needed to know as much as I could. I trusted him and something in his voice, his manner, and his touch made me believe I was going to make it. I am man enough to admit I was good and scared – Steve helped me because he made me believe he knew how frightened I was and needed explanation. I might live to be 100 and I might not, but I won’t live so long to forget the hot wet wash rag – completed by surprise while on my first walk around – rubbed across my back. My God – I really was alive! That felt so good – and – well – he touched me and I believe a wick was lit, and a corner was turned, then and there. I was going to make it. Like another nurse there, I think Steve Miller is more than a nurse – the man is a healer.
