Randena starts talking to the little boy in a motherly voice. She catches his attention within seconds.
Across the room, I see a young boy who has a visible deformity on his arm. Although there is a parent with him, the child is visibly scared of medical personnel. Randena is not his primary nurse but responds to the child's distress and pitches in to help the primary nurse. She starts talking to the little boy in a motherly voice. She catches his attention within seconds. The child's cries slow down, and he starts to become curious when she tells him about her own son. Randena uses open-ended questions to open dialogue about the child's interests and adventures. She shows him her badge and the rainbow on it makes the child smile. The child isn't crying anymore, but talking about his favorite cartoon characters. The primary nurse is now able to be seen by the child as less intimidating, and the little boy now collaborates with care. This ordinary gesture of kindness became an extraordinary and fascinating tool and helped a sweet child in distress get the care he needed. Randena is a great teammate and a caring and very hard-working RN who goes above and beyond her duties to serve our community and coworkers. She is amazing and we are very lucky to have her.
