Dave kept me smiling, encouraged me, and never allowed me to get depressed. He was honest about the situation but positive about the future.
I was admitted initially for a heart catheterization. To my surprise, I had four severely blocked arteries and was told by my physician that I could not return home. Open heart surgery was scheduled for the next day after which I was returned to CVICU. After 24 hours of unconsciousness, I awoke to this smiling face and wondered if I had died and gone to heaven. I was alive and the face was that of my nurse. He devotedly cared for my every need, even anticipating them before I called. He was by my side for his long shift and told me when his shift ended that he would come to see me in stepdown. I cried and cried because he had been my link with life. He kept me smiling, encouraged me, and never allowed me to get depressed. He was honest about the situation but positive about the future. Well, time went on and I was transferred to CV Stepdown. All the staff in CVICU were wonderful. I couldn’t have had better care. The same was true of stepdown. St. Francis is a great hospital and the staff is outstanding. The day before I was dismissed, I was sleeping, and this face appeared above my bed. I thought I was dreaming, and an angel had appeared, but it was that nurse. He kept his promise to see me before I left. He hugged me and hurried on his way after words of encouragement. I know that I will never see him again because of professional relationships but I wish I could just sit down with a cup of tea and thank him for what he has meant to me. I will always keep him in my prayers, and I pray that God will hold him in the hollow of his hand.
