I can’t begin to explain the comfort our family had knowing Josh would be with him as our son gave his gift of life to others in this last selfless act.
A year ago, our son was struck by a speeding car and suffered a life-ending brain injury. He was hospitalized at the University of Iowa Surgical/Neuro ICU. Although declared dead the next morning, as a registered organ donor, our son remained in the SNICU for four more days as the staff did everything possible to try to heal his lungs for donation. Those in charge granted special permission to let his young sons, as well as his brothers, his dad, and me, be at his bedside those last precious days. Every single staff member was beyond compare in the kindness shown to our family, especially to his sons. While everyone was amazing, one nurse stood out for his compassion and excellence. Josh Bern, RN, cared for our son on April 10 & 11. I have been an ER nurse for many years, and although some nurses would feel uncomfortable, Josh allowed me to stay in the room and help with my son's care. He let his sons place their dad’s favorite shirt over his gown and lay family pictures on his chest. They tucked Legos and a rosary into his hands. One of the boys read to his dad from his favorite book while the other gave him foot rubs. Josh tenderly answered all their questions. Each time we needed to clear the room for care, my grandsons insisted on taking the personal items from their dad and return them back in place the way they wanted. During such a horrible time for these young boys, this simple action allowed some tiny bit of control, when no real control over circumstances existed. At the end of one shift, we were holding hands around our son's bed, softly singing, and praying over him. I left the room to ask one more thing of Josh and found him tearful and wiping his eyes. What compassion this showed. The next day, he informed us he got another staff nurse to cover his shift so he could be by my son's side during his donation surgery. I can’t begin to explain the comfort our family had knowing Josh would be with him as our son gave his gift of life to others in this last selfless act. We know what a heavy workload Josh had, and we interrupted his workflow many times over those days; however, he was so incredibly patient with us. He showed such strong professionalism in his care for my son and his family.  Thank you for this opportunity to show our gratitude.
